Celem eseju jest rekonstrukcja krytyki pozytywizmu, jaką przeprowadza H. Giroux, odwołując się do koncepcji Szkoły Frankfurckiej. Służy mu ona następnie jako jeden z fundamentów jego własnej krytycznej filozofii edukacji. Racjonalność, jaka współcześnie dominuje w podejściu do edukacji i programów nauczania, jest zakotwiczona w wąsko pojmowanej idei efektywności, instrumentalności wiedzy, celach behawioralnych i w świadomości scjentystycznej. Obserwacja ta zajmuje centralne miejsce w krytycznej teorii edukacji H.
